Sycamore Class

Welcome to Sycamore Class pages where we hope you will find out all about our Year 4 children and what they have been learning.

Sycamore Class has 30 children and the class is taught by Miss Durham  and Mrs Charles - like the other classes they also get up to all kinds of fun learning!

Home Learning T3 2020

 Update on Terms 1+2 2019

Wow, these part two terms have been full of exciting and amazing learning! 

In maths, we have been learning about place value, addition and subtraction. We have been focusing on using manipulatives to help work out the answer and to prove how we know! We have then been consolidating the column method for addition and subtraction. 

In English, we created our own Norse Myth with characters like the mighty Thor and sneaky Loki! We also read a fabulous book by Francesca Sanna ‘The Journey’ which focused on a family migrating to a new land. The children wrote some beautiful stories! 


In History we learnt all about the Vikings and in Geography we learnt about the 7 continents, what they are, what countries are located within them and different cities within the countries! 


In Science, we learnt about Sound, how sound is made, the different types of sound and the parts of our ear. We also learnt about electricity and made our own electrical circuits. The children absolutely loved this! 


In RE, we learned about Sikhism and Christianity. We learned about how Christians prepare for Christmas and we made our own class Jesse Tree and Advent Wreaths.

In the first term we learnt about indoor athletics and in the second term we learned to play pop-lacrosse. It was so much fun!


What an amazing first two terms for Sycamore class! I can’t wait for the rest of the year! ‚Äč

Update on our learning in Terms 5+6 2019 

Wow!! How the year has flown and how we have grown!

We are an amazing class and we can’t wait to show what strong Oaks we are going to be.

We have been learning all about India and Hinduism, celebrating different cultures and traditions.

In Science, we have been finding out about states of matter with interesting experiments and then learning about classification and habitats. Dave, the arboriculturalist, (tree surgeon!) gave us a lesson on trees and we identified the trees in the school grounds.

We have used our Egyptian topic to support our English by writing explanation texts about how mummies and pyramids are made. We’ve also been reading about Ka, an Egyptian cat, and its travel to Egypt. We even travelled to Egypt on a mission to find our inheritance of an Egyptian artefact, from a long lost Great Uncle, in a maths challenge morning.

Many of us have had the opportunity to experience out of school activities too. A few of us got to take part in a Maths Problem Solving Day and we came back with a medal from the Cricket tournament, missing first place by just one wicket! And we all went off to the Urban Sports day.



 Update on our learning in Terms 3+4 2019

Two thirds, or four sixths, of the way through the academic year already …appropriate as we have been learning about equivalent fractions this term!

We have been learning all about a contrasting country in Geography, comparing our county in the South East of England with the Provence-Alpes-Azur in the South East of France. We used French artists that painted landscapes in the region to create our own interpretations of areas of the UK.

In Science, we have been finding out about our teeth and the digestive system-our bodies are amazing! We finished with an orienteering game to work out how food chains work.

We had a great time reading stories about rainforests and deforestation which helped us write persuasive letters to a variety of chocolate companies regarding their use of palm oil in their products. We were fortunate enough to receive replies too, giving real meaning to our writing.

We have also been studying the Tudors in History and English. We roll played how The Tudor Rose was created, followed Henry VIII, his power and need for a son, and finished with Elizabeth I and the Spanish Armada.   Using ICT, we created animated PowerPoint on the Tudors and wrote stories set in Tudor times. This was all supplemented with an amazing trip to Penshurst Place. In the Main Hall we danced to music and showed reverence, behaved impeccably in front of Elizabeth I, dressed up in Tudor clothing, put Morgan in the stocks and Theo had his arm amputated…old fashioned style!


Terms 1+2 2019

Wow!! What a busy and packed first two terms!  

Our main topic, ‘The Vikings,’ has been so exciting with the help of Thor, Odin and many other of the Viking Gods telling us their tales. We have made our own Viking Helmets and some of us made a shield in Home Learning to match. We sewed our initials on a Viking purse to keep our trading coins, and followed Hiccup and his baby dragon, Toothless, on their first adventure in ‘How to Train Your Dragon’.


In Science, we made our own Steady Hand buzzer game and tested them out. A great few days of designing, testing out errors in our circuits and creating our own game.

We have travelled around the World visiting all seven continents, their countries and capital cities.

In maths, we have been looking at converting km to m and vice versa. We even measured the playground to see how far 10m, 100m and 1000m are. Did you know, if you walked around the playground mound 10 times you would have walked approximately 1000m or 1km?
